I just want to tell you how SDP has changed my life. In the Bay Area for many years I was in Day Programs which seemed to be fine at the time. Then I moved up north with my grandma. Then COVID hit and me and my grandma spent nearly 3 years STUCK in our home, not getting out doing the things I love (Special Olympic Sports mainly) and not getting exercise and seeing and meeting people which is another thing I LOVE. Yes, it took nearly 8 months to get things going due to Alta staffing issues but then we were blessed to have Paul & Daniel navigate the SDP process year one.
Year One was nice, and a lot of work for my mom and "my team" but we learned so much (and still learning). Year Two has been AMAZING, I have done so many things I never thought as a Disabled Person I would EVER be able to do. The workers I have found, the programs we have found, the Camps have all been AMAZING. Some people don't understand this, but I almost feel NORMAL now. My friends and family say they have never seen me so happy and they wish THEY COULD BE ME!! I never in my life thought I would hear those words.
People (outside of family) have always tried to "keep us in a BOX" but SDP has let me "BE ME" and do things I didn't even know I would like.
Carlene´s first goal with the Self-Determination Program was to find a great team to start her Person Centered Planning. There she learned how to manage her budget and and build support for her unmet needs.
She quickly met some new friends that help her get out and about in the world! "I love seeing friends in one space" She participates in Drama Club, bowling, and dance parties now that she can get around with her personal assistant. Carlene loves her personal assistant Desirae she says "Its awesome hanging with Desirae". Together they do cooking, shopping, learn life skills, and so many other fun activities! Carlene has also started learning piano and doing more exercises with her trainer like push-ups, wall squats, and running on the treadmill. She says being active "gets me motivated!"
After gaining an amazing team, overcoming her unmet needs, and being active she now enjoys a bright and full life filled with friends and success. Something she is looking forward to in the future is receiving more Tech-support for a new IPad which can help Carlene navigate sharing music and pictures and learning new things while resting.
We have been part of services through Alta Regional for many, many years and have never seen any support that has done what Engaged Services has provided for our 20 year old daughter.
She has really had difficulties connecting with others and would prefer to spend her day and night in her room watching movies on her iPad.
She worked with her Engaged facilitators to identify her likes and dislikes and what she wants to do now that she’s out of school. (School and the post completion school program just was not meeting her needs)
With the help of Engaged Services and the flexibility of the Self Determination Program, our daughter is happy, spending her days doing the things she really enjoys and talks about her day, non stop! She now laughs, makes jokes and has even used a bad word or two, on occasion. (Totally age appropriate!) She looks forward to her day with zeal. She prepares her own lunch each day, shops for her needs and is outside enjoying the things she has always wanted to do. She is gaining more and more independence and life skills every day! We are so proud of her and could not be happier with her SDP services and Engaged Services.
I would like to add that we were complete skeptics going into the process. Boy were we wrong! Thank you so much Julie, Daniel, Paul and Alta Regional Center for helping our daughter achieve such happiness in just a couple of months! You’re the best!!!
